Drawing from reference provides the opportunity to gain a visual understanding of objects, places and beings that you wouldn't have a chance to draw from life otherwise. It's important that when drawing from reference you do not make a direct copy of the original image, but rather translate the image into your own visual understanding. Repeating the process helps to reiterate the understanding of said thing into your head. I found that through repetition my drawings became more accurate, even when they were purposely stylised they still looked more "like the penguin" than before.
