visual communication: gif storyboarding and character development

I had created a lot of different characters and wasn't sure which direction to go in with my gifs, so storyboarded gifs for a few different themes. I was later told that the three gifs can be of three unrelated characters.

I selected three different gifs of differing types and difficulty to make. I picked:

  • Laika: an almost still foreground and character with moving background
  • Disco Leaf: complicated moving character with static background
  • Matching Couple: changing foreground and background. Characters are fairly static but there will be small movements in between in scene changes to make things more visually interesting. Although the animation itself isn't complex this gif could be the hardest to make because of the complexity of the images themselves.
The three different complexities mean I can invest more time into creating a complicated animation and practicing this skill without sacrificing the illustrative qualities of the others.

Although the three gifs could be of unrelated characters it would be nice for them to work as a series. As I feel I like the three differing ideas too much it would be best to make the three gifs match in terms of media used, to add some consistency.

That said, I was considering making Laika's gif in pencil, in a similar way to the sketches. There is something about the rough textural quality of the sky that I like and can imagine animated, to create a subtle twitchy effect. However I don't think this will suit the other ideas. Perhaps if I have some spare time at the end of this I will do it as an extra!
