I had the idea of camouflage being a mutant superpower, and wanted to construct this in a non-digital way. I drew the background without a ruler, partly for aesthetic reasons but also for practical ones- it would be very hard to create perfectly straight lines on my face and it would match better if I emphasised the wonkiness. Although the lines weren't intended to be straight, the line quality itself on my face became smudged which did not give a great finish to the image.
Partly out of embarrassment of photographing my face, but also to make something more illustrative I made cardboard cartoon-y facial features which just turned out looking pretty scary.
