responsive: looking for briefs

live briefs I am interested in:

  • Folio Society: War Horse a substantial brief consisting of three book illustrations and a hardbound cover design, which should tick some boxes in accordance to quantity. I don't see myself necessarily as a children's illustrator (not that I'm a particularly adult one) so it would be interesting to tackle this. I haven't read the book or seen the film so hopefully won't have any preconceptions that will influence my illustrations too much.
  • Secret-7": the 2016 brief is not yet online but it's definitely one I'm interested in. I have a general interest in music and album artwork so it would keep me interested at least. I think I have seen that one artist can enter multiple times as long as each entry is for a different song so it would be interesting to create a series/ and even if they don't work together (that could be a little odd depending on the artists chosen) it would mean a more substantial body of work.
  • Loop De Loop: I'm not an animator but after the gif project of last year it is something I have found I enjoy, in smaller quantities. I will have to check but it looks like you can submit gifs, which I think would be more suitable for my way of working. I think it would be fun but also good to do animation, after all responsive is about expanding practice too!

FOLIO SOCIETY: WAR HORSE

  • What problem(s) are identified by the brief?
    • the Folio Society would like to publish an edition of War Horse and need illustrations and a binding design to suit their range (all of their books are accompanied with binding designs and inside illustrations/ images)
  • What is the brief asking you to do about it/them?
    • create three book illustrations and design a binding design
  • What is the brief trying to achieve?
    • a visually pleasing book cover and illustrations that communicate the story and it's meanings and morals but also, presumably, to sell copies and make money from it (it's a for profit organisation)
  • Who will benefit?
    • this brief is mostly about benefiting the company itself, as they would like to make money from selling these books!
    • but having an aesthetically pleasing book also benefits readers
  • What is the message?
    • in the brief itself I don't think there are many ethics involved and it is a mostly aesthetic pursuit, but I suppose that any messages that come from the book I will find out when I read it
  • Who is the audience?
    • I think War Horse is written for older children, though I'm not entirely sure. However, as it will be an adult, probably a parent or family member buying it they will need to be convinced by the book (cover) too. Folio Society books are high in price and involve a lot of craft and I wonder how much a child would be persuaded by a book like that rather than a cheaper softbound edition of the same book. Still, images speak before words, and I think this is particularly true of children.
    • Also, as a fancy collector's item, it may be marketed at adults who had read the book when younger, or like the book now too! And also people who enjoyed the film and would like to read the book.
  • How will the message be delivered?
    • binding design and illustrations suited to children
  • Can you foresee any problems in responding to the brief?
    • the brief involves making quite a few illustrations and I wonder how long it will take to do them all. Also I am yet to read the book so will have to do that first too! (could take some time, although it is a children's book)
